Philosophy of care
My philosophy of care is that each patient is an individual. Not everyone’s body reads “the textbook.” Very different aspects come into play when creating a treatment plan that’s best for a given patient. My approach is very individualized. It’s important to empower the people I take care of. I want them to know what I know and make the decisions together. Their autonomy and ability to choose an option that works best is very important because there is seldom just one option.
Why I entered medicine
I always knew I wanted to be a doctor and specifically an obstetrician-gynecologist but it’s hard to say why. Was it because TV shows with doctors really appealed to me? Was it the game Operation? Or was it the fact that I really enjoyed helping my family members when they got hurt, always eager to bring them a Band-Aid? Medicine is just something I’ve always wanted to do. Now I have specific clinical interests like polycystic ovarian syndrome, infertility, weight management, irregular periods and minimally invasive surgery, and I can’t imagine doing anything else.
Community involvement
I strongly support mentorship. I’m part of a group that advises the Cornell University president with a focus on women’s issues. It’s a dynamic group of women – inspirational figures involved with various interests, including health care and government. I’m involved with that group’s mentorship committee, which meets and connects with college students to help usher them along their journey. I support the American Ballet Theatre. The arts are very important to me, and fostering creativity in children is vital.
Personal interests
I was trained as a classical ballerina and performed with the San Diego Ballet. I also enjoy yoga, meditation and spending time with my family.
