About Dr. Stelian Serban

Dr. Stelian Serban is a board-certified, fellowship-trained interventional pain medicine specialist with nearly two decades of experience caring for patients with complex acute and chronic pain conditions. Before joining Redefine Healthcare, he served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he also co-directed the Division of Pain Management. Dr. Serban completed his Pain Medicine Fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, with additional interventional training at The Hospital for Special Surgery and Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. His areas of expertise include complex regional pain syndrome, chronic cancer pain, intrathecal therapies, neuromodulation, and advanced interventional procedures for spinal, thoracic, and cervical spine disorders. A dedicated educator, Dr. Serban has trained hundreds of fellows, residents, and medical students and previously served as Program Director of the ACGME-accredited Pain Medicine Fellowship at Mount Sinai. Under his leadership, the program achieved full accreditation and a 100% subspecialty board-pass rate. Dr. Serban has held significant leadership roles in pain quality improvement, protocol development, and hospital-wide pain management initiatives. As Co-Chair of the Mount Sinai Health System Pain Committee, he oversaw major advances in analgesic safety, standardized pain protocols across hospitals, and led programs that dramatically improved patient-reported pain scores and reduced opioid-related adverse events. His work has earned multiple awards, including the Cullman Family Award for Excellence in Physician Communication and the Physician of the Year Special Recognition Award at Mount Sinai. Dr. Serban is board-certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine.
