Steven C. Kowaleski, M.D. was raised in Toledo, Ohio, attended St. Louis University and received his M.D. degree from the Ohio State University School of Medicine. He came to California in 1978 for his residency training at
Children's Hospital Medical Center, Oakland. Prior to completing his training in 1982, he traveled to Central America and the Caribbean where he participated in
several rural medicine clinics. He would like to return and practice medicine in other clinics around the world, but has to get his children through college first. He believes the practice of pediatrics may be summarized by the following
quote by Voltaire.
"The art of medicine consists in amusing the patient while naturecures the disease".
While he does like to try and amuse the patients (parents too), he knows this is not the only responsibility of the Pediatrician. Parent education in growth, child development, nutrition, vaccination and medications are only
some of the many topics with which the pediatrician must deal. He highlyvalues personal communication between the family and himself, with medical decisions being made on a mutual basis. Though the Pediatric Medical Group will
hopefully be a place where your child is happy and laughing (except maybe shot days)and the parents will be cheerful too (except on the days bills are due),he knows Voltaire also said "A witty saying proves nothing".
