More about Dr. Thomas Kartis, MD

Dr. Kartis was born in New York City. He received all of his formal education and training in New York and in Boston. These are two places which are truly world-renown for many different reasons. New York and Boston are two of the places where surgeons-in-training from around the world often aspire to obtain their training. Dr. Kartis was fortunate but also worked very hard to obtain his world-class training and experience. Dr. Kartis honors the “Golden Rule” in his approach to patient care. Dr. Kartis strives to treat each patient as he would hope to be treated if he himself were the patient, or as he would hope a member of his own family were treated. In effect, Dr. Kartis strives to treat his patients as though they were actually members of his own family. Patients and family members occasionally ask a doctor: “What would you do if it were your family? “Treating” patients a certain way does not mean for a surgeon to always perform surgery. Equally important for a surgeon is to know when to not operate. Patients are often “treated” or managed non-operatively in conjunction with other doctors and specialists. However it is often necessary for a surgeon to decide that an operation is not needed at a particular time, but that follow-up may instead be recommended. This is called “observation.” An operation may be recommended at some future date if a particular condition progresses during the observation period despite the non-operative approach. This sort of reassurance by a surgeon often helps begin the healing process – the healing of a condition not even requiring surgery, by offering “peace of mind.”
