About Dr. Valerie Serrano

After finishing her undergraduate degree in nutrition and foods at the University of Houston, Dr. Serrano earned her medical degree at Ross University School of Medicine in Portsmouth, Dominica. She completed her residency at UT Health San Antonio Medical School, where she was an academic chief resident.
Dr. Serrano treats a range of conditions, including obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes, and offers immunizations. Another primary clinical interest is adolescent medicine.
Her nutrition degree was Dr. Serrano’s first stop on the way to a medical career. With three physician siblings, she wanted to take a different path, but when she realized she wanted to take care of the whole patient, she decided to attend medical school. Her early training remains the basis of her interest in nutrition, weight loss, and health maintenance.
Dr. Serrano takes a holistic approach to care, looking at patients as individuals. She wants them to know what’s going on and that they have autonomy over their bodies. She ensures that they can not only understand lab results but also follow her reasoning behind ordering tests and medications. To help them interpret written information and online charting, she uses a variety of explanations and illustrations. When they leave her office, she wants them to have a grasp of things they may not have previously understood.
Her favorite part of the practice is celebrating patients’ successes—improved diabetes and lowering blood pressure—as well as seeing them reach life milestones like high school or college graduation.

The office space was really clean and the ladies at the front desk were pleasant. It took less than 30 mins for me to get called to the back. I don’t feel like Dr. Serrano really listened to me. Everything I said, I feel like she didn’t take it serious because I appeared to be young and healthy. I didn’t sit on the exam bed once and this was an annual physical exam. She barely listened to my heart & lungs. She didn’t follow up with me on my labs, which some were out of whack. She’s nice but I just don’t feel that she was thorough compared to other providers I’ve had in the past.
