Dr. Vanessa M. Givens grew up in Bruceton, Tennessee. In 1992, she graduated Magna Cum Laude from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, receiving her Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She then moved to Memphis where she received her M.D. from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). She subsequently completed her internships and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in the College of Medicine. Dr. Givens then received fellowship training in Advanced Abdominal and Pelvic Surgery from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 2001 to 2002.
Dr. Givens remained on faculty at UTHSC between September 2001 and September 2014. During this time, she had a variety of university appointments including Assistant Director of Gynecologic Specialties, Associate Professor of Family Medicine, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Fellowship Director of the Family Medicine Women’s Advanced Health Care Fellowship. She was responsible for teaching medical students, residents in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Family Medicine, and fellows in both departments. Her clinical activities included taking care of high-risk Obstetric and Gynecologic patients, performing both minimally invasive and open pelvic surgeries, and seeing patients in the office setting. Her clinical interests include abnormal PAP smears and HPV, adolescent gynecology including long-acting contraceptive options, preventive healthcare throughout a woman’s lifespan, and pelvic surgery.
Dr. Givens has numerous journal publications as well as award winning research papers. She has been listed every year since 2005 in “Best Doctors in America” and she has been named one of “America’s Top Obstetricians and Gynecologists” by Consumers’ Research Council of America. She is currently a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP). In her free time, she is a dedicated wife and mother of three boys and one girl.

So thankful I found Dr. Givens. She was thorough and polite. She answered all of my questions and never made me feel rushed. She told me everything she was doing beforehand and made certain I was comfortable. In spite of it being my first appointment and a lobby full of other patients, I was seen slightly before my appointment time. I would recommend her to anyone and will definitely be using her as my doctor in the future.

I think the front office is still figuring out the new patient registration process, seemed like a lot of duplication (electronic and paper).
The doctor was/is wonderful - worth the effort!!

Dr. Givens and her nurse were great! The mundane amount of questions about history (although extremely thorough) as well as the process by which one goes about completing the info on the electronic tablets seems friendly and up to date, it just isn't. I found myself helping other older patients in the waiting room complete their information.
Dr. G was thorough and pleasant. She was not too aggressive on any issues I presented with. Definitely not "surgery-happy" which is a relief.

I received a promotional piece in the mail from Women's Health welcoming a new partner Dr. Givens. I read favorable reviews on her and because of ease in booking an appointment online and filling out medical history and insurance info online, I decided to forego my annual checkup with the Ruch Clinic of 15 years and try Dr. Givens. In the lobby of the building, with NO SIGNS, I stood in a long line at an admitting window only to be told that the Dr's offices were on the second floor. Second floor waiting room was empty - that should have been my first clue. Receptionist was on the phone. She gave me a clipboard full of forms to fill out, all duplicates of ones I had already filled out online. I showed receptionist my text message from ZocDoc stating that my information was sent to the providing Dr's office. She calls office manager and conveys back to me that office manager does not know how to get my ZocDoc information. That the forms I filled out online were ZocDoc's forms and not the forms required by the Dr's office. Contrary to the facts shown on www.whsobgyn.com website. Training is hugely lacking in this office. If a promotion piece is sent out to residences, training must be given to staff to handle new processes. It took 45 minutes to see the Dr.
