Howard D. Gofstein is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Michigan who has been practicing since 2001. He earned his MEd in Community Agency Counseling from Wayne State University. Howard believes in approaching any new counseling relationship with flexibility, adaptability, creativity, and curiosity, welcoming people to share as much about themselves as they would like—and that every detail is helpful. He understands that a new client expects to walk away from that first meeting with a sense that he has been paying attention and truly understands what they are going through, and that he has some idea as to how they can eventually resolve their issue. Howard thinks it is important to be engaged and enthusiastic, to show sincere interest, and to be “in the moment” with that new person. Most important, even though his profession tends to consider things like anxiety and depression to be “disorders,” Howard believes these are natural human emotions that fall on the continuum of feelings we all experience. Life is, after all, stressful, and each of us reacts to stress in our own way. Sometimes these reactions are productive and helpful, and sometimes they are not. A therapist’s job is to let a person know that there is nothing “wrong” with him or her, and that there is always some kind of helpful answer. Howard believes the goal of therapy is to help individuals feel as calm, confident, centered, and contented as possible—rather than “curing” some “disorder.” Outside of work, Howard enjoys reading about history, popular culture, and the behind-the-scenes workings of Hollywood and the entertainment industry (especially its golden age), as well as traveling to Washington, D.C., and other historically significant places—such as the homes of former presidents.
