I have learned the importance of promoting well-being across multiple aspects of an individual's life through a decade of experience in behavioral health agencies and hospital settings alike. Difficulties can arise when people attempt to navigate issues surrounding substance use, mental, and physical health. Individuals often encounter strong feelings of guilt or shame associated with their diagnoses that can cause strains within the family unit. Sexuality is a particularly complex domain that often impacts several aspects of a person’s life. Specific issues related to sexual dysfunction or sexuality tend to be ignored or not prioritized.
My clinical practice is integrative in nature. As a social worker, my theoretical orientation is always informed by a social justice and a systems lens. I use a brain-based approach when developing treatment plans with my clients. I primarily use cognitive behavior therapy and motivational interviewing to target and help strengthen the prefrontal cortex. During sessions, I gently challenge clients' cognitive distortions and guide them to actionable and measurable change. I also teach clients to incorporate strategies to target subcortical regions of the brain and address their own trauma or stress-related symptoms.
