One of the most important things a counselor can do is create an open and safe environment for someone to tell their story and share their pain. The first thing Kayla strives to do when you come to session is make you feel safe and comfortable. Kayla listens with an open mind to hear anything you feel is important and receive it with unconditional positive regard. She aims to create a comforting and welcoming environment for every client that walks through the door. Kayla previously worked in inpatient psychiatric facilities as well as in community mental health before transitioning into private practice.
Kayla primarily works from an ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) framework. This focuses on what is going on in your life, what may be bothering you, why you decided to come to counseling. ACT therapy maintains that sometimes, those things may never go away, and despite the things that are wrong in our lives, we continue to live and can learn to live well even if things aren’t going according to plans. Kayla works with your values, your dreams and goals, and helps to make a committed plan of action to reach them while managing the less-than-ideal things going on. She is focused on helping you learn to cope in less than ideal conditions while teaching your skills to thrive in life.
Kayla is also experienced in CBT as well as narrative therapy, person-centered therapy, and different forms of art and drama therapy. She has worked extensively with addictions and substance use, anger management, and issues in parenting, and has knowledge centered around crisis management. Kayla is a flexible counselor, and knows that not everyone is going to like or benefit from the same type of therapy.
