It is the intention of the therapist to get the client to their expected goal.
I would do this by delving into childhood experiences, any trauma , and any uncomfortable situations that they were in.
This would be the baseline to build on to either leave the old behind or to accept it as it is and to move forward with a treatment plan.

If a problem is scraped off piece by piece then the problem isn't so big and it eases the client knowing that it is manageable.
