Hi there, I'm Thomas!
My name is Thomas Ryan but I use my middle name, it is friendlier – Pete. I have forty years of experience as a social worker. My Theoretical foundation is Cognitive Behavioral, with extensive training in various CBT modalities. I practiced in remote settings for over twenty years with trauma clients and the varied trauma manifestations.
My approach
My Therapeutic approach embodies the codified social work values - respect for the individual and the client’s right to self-determination. Meeting the client “where they are” is the cornerstone of a good therapeutic alliance and positive outcomes.
My focus
With 20 years of remote work in Alaska, I have experience with a wide spectrum of clients and their needs. I am comfortable meeting clients across a wide spectrum of behavioral health concerns.
My communication style
I always endeavor to create a safe and welcoming environment. I have learned how to ask difficult questions in ways that promote healthy self-reflection. Good mood, intentions, and humor are always present.
My journey to mental healthcare
While my kids are adults I still identify as a full-time single parent. My family struggled with several psycho/social issues. Those experiences shaped me more than any graduate-level course on my path to being a therapist.
My goals for you
Goal setting is approached from a solution focus as opposed to a problem focus. Clients are encouraged to set goals that are attainable, rewarding, measurable, and specific. Short-term objectives are critical to long-term goal attainment and are always explored.
My first session with you
Client rapport is the focus of the first session. Safety and trust are necessary for a strong therapeutic alliance, and a strong alliance enhances positive outcomes.
