Dr. Chavis has practiced dentistry in Washington, D.C., for more than 20 years. He specializes in both cosmetic and general dentistry and has a special interest in computer-assisted dental restorations. His offices at Chavis Dental in downtown Washington are equipped with the latest dental technologies.
Dr. Chavis earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland. He then continued his studies at the University of Maryland, College of Dental Surgery, where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He then completed an externship in oral surgery at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, where he became skilled in oral surgical techniques and bone grafting. Dr. Chavis also completed a general practice residency at Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly, Maryland.
Dr. Chavis is trained to work with dental implants and received his certificate from the International Institute of Implant Dentistry. He is also skilled in working with CEREC® technology, which allows him to create life-like porcelain restorations often in only one dental visit. Dr. Chavis participates regularly in continuing education courses and dental societies in order to maintain active relationships with other dental specialists in Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas. He also participates in ongoing training and certification at Spear Education within the Scottsdale Center for Dentistry, one of the foremost continuing dental education centers.

The dental office was clean and the staff was professional. The office did not clearly identify the cost of the visit and was advertised on ZocDoc as being in-network when the office took a different grade it my insurance, which doubled the pit of pocket cost. When asking for clarification the situation was spun toward the quality of care, rather than the fact that they were not an in-network provider (a fact that I had to confirm afterward with research). Several additional treatments were provided without clearly identifying costs. When I was made aware, I paid the costs of the visit and indicated that I would not like to schedule a follow-up appointment because they are out of network. The front office staff pushed sales hard, telling me I could be set up on a payment plan for future visits. The visit felt more like an experience at a used car lot than a health care provider.

Five stars is not enough- Dr. Chavis and his dedicated staff are a great team. If I could select 10-stars for all the categories above I would. There is no other dentist in the DC-metro area that delivers the level of care Dr. Chavis does. I have been a patient of Dr. Chavis for over 13-years, and though I no longer live in DC, I drive well over an hour to this practice as I trust no other dentist with my teeth. From crowns, root canals, cleaning, bleaching, fillings, laminates and more the work by this dentist and his talented team has been consistently stellar.

Had to make emergency appointment while I was on vacation. Dr. Chavis responded back immediately and had me come in on Monday morning. I was taken in right away. Dr. Chavis was able to resolve the problem quickly and professionally and I was on my way with in an hour. Everyone in the office was professional and kind.

I have a very negative experience with Dr. Chavis. I went in for a teeth cleaning, Dr. Chavis did my examination and cleaning and his team conducted my X-rays and polish. Throughout every interaction with Dr. Chavis, I was mocked and berated for my dental hygiene (mind you, I am 25, never had a cavity, and take good care of my teeth - hence why I was getting a cleaning). At several points during my exam, it felt as though he was even making the experience intentionally painful - all the while criticizing me over and over. I left the office in tears. Do not visit this office.

I went in for a cleaning/consultation and really appreciated Dr. Chavis' thoroughness. I'd been going to the same dentist for my entire life (~20 years) who had never once caught/mentioned the minor tooth wear, gum recession, etc. that Dr. Chavis noticed. I also appreciated that at every step of my appointment, he explained (and showed me) what he was doing, what things meant, etc. He was careful not to exaggerate or be alarmist about my gum problems and didn't try to sell me on any unnecessary procedures. He's clearly a very smart, acute dentist.

I hadn't been to the dentist in several years and was very nervous about this appointment. Even after bursting into tears at one point, Dr. Chavis and his staff stayed calm and helped me get through the appointment comfortably. It wasn't the most fun I've ever had, but I left feeling relieved. That Dr. Chavis didn't condescend or make me feel awful for my negligence was especially appreciated.

I hate to write a bad review because the staff was outstanding and very helpful. Dr. Chavis on the other hand was not super helpful. I'm sure he is very competent but he was condescending during my visit and just seemed to have limited people skills. If all you need is a decent dentist than I would look elsewhere.

I had a really great first visit with Cary T. Chavis, DDS. Everyone was very friendly, and Dr. Chavis answered all of my questions about starting with a new dentist. He made several recommendations, and was willing to discuss any of my concerns. I'll definitely be back for all future appointments.
