Dr. Kari Whatley holds the position as a staff psychiatrist at Talkiatry. She is double board-certified in general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. She has been practicing for 7 years. Dr. Whatley’s practice focuses on medication management. She often integrates techniques of cognitive behavioral therapy, supportive therapy, motivational interviewing, and acceptance and commitment therapy into medication management appointments. If Dr. Whatley believes that additional therapy is needed, then she will recommend adding an individual therapist into your care team.
Dr. Whatley received her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. She completed her residency with the Louisiana State University Our Lady of the Lake Psychiatry Residency Program and moved back to her home state of Texas to complete her child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship program with the University of Texas Dell Medical School. During her time in training, she worked with Avail Telemedicine and provided crisis evaluations for adults within Texas via telepsychiatry visits. After completing her fellowship, she remained with the University of Texas Dell Medical School as an assistant professor of psychiatry, led a team on the child and adolescent psychiatric unit within Dell Children’s Medical Center, and served as Associate Program Director of the child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship program.
During her time at Dell Children’s, she worked on a quality improvement team to implement organization-wide trauma-informed care. Dr. Whatley enjoys working with children, adolescents, and adults with a variety of psychiatric needs. She is board-certified in both general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. Her primary areas of focus include trauma-informed care as well as anxiety and mood disorders.
