More about Dr. Alex Coletta, PsyD
Dr. Coletta received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Creative Writing from Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore, MD. She then earned her MA and PsyD in Clinical Psychology at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Washington, DC where she studied the role of attachment in lesbian identity development and received specialized training in directive and non-directive play therapy.
During her clinical training, Dr. Coletta has worked in hospital, private practice, college and community mental health settings. She has experience working with an array of psychological presentations
including trauma, anxiety, depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation,
and voyeurism. She has provided therapy for individuals ranging from ages 3 - 70+.
Dr. Coletta sees every person that walks through her door as unique and does not treat the therapeutic process as “one-size- fits all.” She tailors treatment to the specific needs of the individual using a combination of solution-focused strategies as well as insight-oriented and acceptance-based interventions.
While her approach to therapy is grounded in psychodynamic theory, she utilizes Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy as well as expressive art and play therapy techniques. She works with children, adolescents, and adults experiencing a wide variety of presenting concerns, such as anxiety and mood disorders, ADHD and behavioral issues, sexuality and gender exploration, identity development, family of origin issues, developmental issues, adjustment and life transitions, interpersonal conflicts, and unresolved trauma.
She believes that the most important aspect of a successful therapy experience is a strong, authentic relationship with your therapist, which is why she emphasizes developing trust and respect in order to create the most comfortable, supportive space for you to work towards personal growth and a happier, more satisfying life.
