Dr. Fonseca was born in the United States Virgin Islands where he completed high school in 1975. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Florida State University (FSU) in Tallahassee, FL in 1979. He was a member of Alpha Chi Chemistry Fraternity and Kappa Alpha Psi Social Fraternity in college. Dr. Fonseca was one of a select few students to ever teach and be responsible for final grades in an undergraduate class at Florida State University while still himself an undergraduate student. Dr Fonseca did research on Lupus in the biochemistry department at F.S.U. through a Cancer Society Grant. He researched photochemistry in the organic chemistry department at F.S.U. through an Eastman Kodak Grant. He attended medical school at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL and received his MD. In 1984. . He completed two years of General Surgery at Wright State University Affiliated Hospitals in Dayton, Ohio in 1986. Dr. Fonseca then spent a year at the E.I. Du-Pont Institute in Wilmington DE where he researched spinal impaction trauma and muscle atrophy. For his work in spinal trauma he received the Russell Hibbs Award for outstanding research by The Scoliosis Research Society at their annual meeting in 1987. Dr. Fonseca graduated from Drew University’s orthopaedic program in 1991 where he was the Executive Chief Resident. During his residency he received training at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital, Martin Luther King Hospital, USC Medical Center, Shriner’s Hospital in Spokane, Washington, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Orthopaedic Hospital and the Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic. In 1992 Dr. Fonseca completed a post-graduate fellowship in spinal surgery with Dr. Leon Wiltse a world renowned pioneer in spinal diseases, researcher and teacher. He worked at Long Beach Memorial Hospital, The Veteran’s Hospital Medical Center in Long Beach and UCI Medical Center during his post graduate training. The following year he entered private practice. He remained on staff as attending physician at UCI Medical Center and the Veteran’s Hospital Medical Center until 1997. Dr. Fonseca became Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) in 1995 and became a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery (AAOS) in 1996. Dr. Fonseca was re-certified (ABOS) in 2005 and is certified though 2015. Dr. Fonseca is a member of the North American Spine Society (NASS). Dr. Fonseca has presented at the AAOS annual meeting, the NASS annual meeting, International Society for Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS), American back society, various resident teaching and grand rounds. In November 2005 he presented a discussion on Artificial Disc Replacement at the California Association of Occupational Health Nurses annual meeting in San Francisco, CA.
