I get really nervous when meeting with medical providers (especially for new patient appointments), and I typically decline to have my weight taken. There was some pushback from the medical assistant regarding my refusal to have my weight taken, but they relented after I asserted my rights as a patient to decline. Due to my heightened emotional state, I was crying by the time the provider entered the room, and I cried for the entire duration of the appointment. She was very respectful and understanding and made it clear she wanted us to work together to make sure I get the best possible care. I have a couple co-morbidities, and we briefly discussed that she has managed them for other patients. I felt seen and supported, and I felt confident that she will treat me as a person first and as a patient second. I even scheduled a follow up.
