More about Angel Johnson, NP
Most children growing up have certain responsibilities to complete before going out to play or see friends. I was no different, except for the fact that my mother was a nurse and my responsibilities included bringing fresh water to older adults at the hospital. It was a very simple task, but one that ingrained caring and service into my bones. Little did I know the impact this experience would make on a person’s day and ultimately, on my life.
I was accepted to the Arizona State University College of Nursing and Healthcare Innovation program in 2006. It was here that I found my first love— being a teaching assistant for human anatomy and physiology. I graduated from Arizona State University in 2007 and began my nursing career in the Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Banner Boswell Medical Center. There, I honed my skills as a critical care nurse and provided care for critically ill patients and their families. My time here was very rewarding and set the foundation for being proactive anticipating patient needs. I also gave my time as a preceptor for new nurses and nursing students, providing clinical opportunities and promoting education. In 2008, I began to work towards the nurse practitioner certification. My clinical rotation took me to Gilbert, Arizona with a talented cardiologist. Interested in the cardio-renal relationship, I focused my final project on biomarker screening for chronic kidney disease. In 2011, I graduated with my Master of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois and became board-certified as an Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP). At that time, I accepted a position working in the hospital and office setting with an excellent cardiology practice in downtown Phoenix. It was at that time that I developed a deep passion for clinical research-- bringing the best clinical practices to the bedside. During this time, I transitioned into an Internal Medicine and Urgent Care practice. In this setting, I focused on health promotion, nutrition counseling, and management of multiple complex health conditions. In 2014, I graduated from the University of St. Francis with the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. I was honored to serve as the DNP Student Representative and deliver the closing remarks at our commencement ceremony. My final project focused on Alzheimer’s dementia and ways to keep the brain healthy—a fitting project guided by clinical rotation in neurology, experiences at the Banner Sun Health Research Institute Brain and Body Donation Program, and performing research with the Centers for Healthy Aging. This reignited my connection to geriatrics and brought me full-circle to the population where my whole nursing career started. Currently, I provide care to guests at Santé of Surprise, a subacute inpatient rehabilitation center located in Surprise, Arizona.
I enjoy traveling, reading, piano, and movies. My husband and I have two wonderful dogs, and we spend as much time as we can with family. I am a member of the Arizona Geriatric Society, American Association of Nurse Practitioners, American Nurses Association/ Arizona Nurse’s Association, and Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society. Previous affiliations include the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
