More about Dr. Bernard Spier, MD
Board certified in 1989, Dr. Spier has trained at some of the most prestigious American institutions. He was an undergraduate at Brandeis University, and attended medical school at UMDNJ. Residency included positions at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Yale-New Haven Hospital, Boston City Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Harvard's Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.
After completing this training, Dr. Spier practiced ophthalmology in Rhode Island with one of the world's most renowned cataract and refractive surgeons. During his four years there, Dr. Spier performed thousands of surgical and laser procedures using the most "cutting edge" technology. Dr. Spier joined the Northern New Jersey Eye Institute in 1992, and became partners with Dr. Norris in 1994. Since Dr. Norris' retirement in 1997, Dr. Spier has been the senior ophthalmologist at the Institute.
Dr. Spier employs the latest techniques in cataract and implant surgery. He uses the Rapid Vision™ method, whereby no needle, no stitches and no patch are required. Patients are pain free during the five to ten-minute procedure, since only anesthetic drops are used to numb the eye. Most patients walk out of our in-office surgery suite without an eye patch, seeing better and able to resume their normal activities immediately. Dr. Spier has extensive experience with accommodating implants such as the Crystalens, Restor, and Technis Multifocal, reducing dependence on reading glasses.
Having performed over 10,000 cataract and implant procedures over the last 20 years, Dr. Spier has the experience to provide the highest level of eye care. He has special expertise in “difficult or complicated” cataract procedures and one-eyed patients.

Very professional. The cataract surgery and follow up visit with Dr Spier were awesome. I was especially impressed with Beth when i registered fir the surgery, and the anesthesiologist, who took me through every step. Very reassuring. Office staff at frontdesk or registration was very rude. Long wait time unformed reason of delay and no update that there is going to be long wait. People came last seen first. Dotor is excellent that compensated all the frustrations on account of unbecoming reception and nurse was well behaved.

Poor bedside manner!! Upon entering the examination room he appeared rushed, did not greet me and proceeded to talk with his back turn to me. He received a phone call, which he answered leaving the examination room during the consultation. Thereafter, I attempted to explain my initial concern and asked him to check one eye, he said, in an annoyed manner as he barely looked at my eye, "there is nothing there, I don't see anything," then left. I was very upset but the way he dismissed my concern. My Initial problem has exacerbated, causing me to schedule an appointment with another doctor at a different facility. I guess he was having a bad day but as a health care provider, I expect a higher standard of professionalism.

My complaint is not specifically with Dr Spier. However, I wear contact lenses 90% of the time, so why would you schedule me to see a doctor who does NOT measure for contact lenses? What a waste of my time! And I had to wait so long for an appointment that I had to order a new supply of lenses, so now when I find another doctor, one who can actually take care of my needs, these will be useless...what a waste. I will not be returning to your office.

A little dry personality wise & compared to Dr Tran my previous doctor I felt the exam was rushed or not as thorough.

My husband and I both had appointments with Dr. Spier, and his staff managed to accommodate us with ease. Dr. Spier has a pleasant, interested manner and always provides details about our eye condition.
I am indebted to him because I had been seeing another ophthalmologist and a retina specialist. After giving me a thorough eye examination, Dr. Spier said it really was not necessary for me to see a retina specialist or to take special pills and eye health-related vitamins. I had been so apprehensive every time I'd see the specialist because I had been told my retina might detach. Anyway, I feel I am now in great hands with Dr. Spier, and I'm not looking back!
