The future of medicine moves beyond simply treating symptoms toward preventing disease by identifying root causes and implementing proactive strategies that promote longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives. This philosophy reflects the transition from Medicine 2.0 to Medicine 3.0, as described by Peter Attia, M.D., in Outlive (2023).
A root cause refers to the underlying biological, physiological, environmental, or psychosocial mechanism that initiates and perpetuates disease, rather than the downstream symptoms or diagnostic labels that emerge from it. In both medicine and psychiatry, the root cause represents the primary driver of pathophysiology - the upstream factor that, when properly addressed, can improve or resolve multiple symptoms simultaneously.
Within psychiatry, root causes are best understood as biological or neurophysiological disruptions that alter brain signaling networks governing mood, cognition, behavior, and perception. Psychiatric diagnoses describe observable patterns of behavior and experience; root-cause medicine seeks to understand and correct the underlying brain biology producing those patterns.
This philosophy serves as the foundation of my functional and nutritional psychiatry practice, informs my personal lifestyle, and guides my ongoing research and professional education. I am particularly committed to working with individuals who are motivated to address the upstream drivers of complex psychiatric conditions, including emerging challenges such as Long COVID.
