She is a lovely person and easy to talk to. I was kind of hoping that when I took the time to compile a written psych hx for her review that she would have read more thoroughly so that we could get more done in the hour visit. We could have just saved a little time, maybe. No worries.

Dr. Roberts was very knowledgeable and figured my daughter's complicated diagnosis out in no time. I wish we would have den her a long time ago.
My daughter enjoyed that Dr. Roberts has her dogs in the office. I think it really helped her to relax and open up.
I've been in private practice in Austin Texas since 1983; providing outpatient services to both adults and children for 30 years. In addition to psychiatric evaluation and medication management, I also provide psychotherapy services. I have 1 long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy group for adults.
I have dedicated my practice to maintaining the integration of psychotherapy into the practice of psychiatry. I have been an active member of the Austin Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology and have done my own analysis. Also, I am trained in EMDR and have maintained a long-term psycho-dynamic group for adults almost 20 years. I use the continuing education services of the Neuroscience Education Institute to maintain a current knowledge of the appropriate use of medications in treatment.
Dr. Roberts accepts referrals for evaluation, psychotherapy, and medication evaluation. Because she believes needs are best assessed when she has frequent contact with the patient, she does not accept medication only referrals when patients prefer to have another therapist and a medicating psychiatrist unless the referral is made by the therapist directly to her. She frequently will see patients with uncomplicated ADHD for medication only.

The overall presentation of the where you sat was fine if you're in a college friend's dorm room, but not so great if paying to seek medical advice. The tissue box (with only a few tissues left in it) was crushed, and there was dog hair all over the office and myself. I smelled like dog for the rest of the day.

The office is filthy. Her dogs run around and there is long dog hair all over the furniture, floor and her office couch. We left covered in dog hair. While we were waiting in the waiting area one of the dogs lifted it's leg and peed all on the side of the chair and floor. They're were also pee stains on the corner of the couch and floor. And the therapist didn't like she was concerned with hygiene.

Her office is like a private retreat with some interesting artwork and a casual, unhurried feeling. I was impressed by her punctuality, and the attention to health related details during the office visit.

Following my initial treatment session with Dr. Roberts this week, I'm thus far notably impressed. Dr. Roberts may well be eccentric, as a few reviewers have noted elsewhere on the Internet. However, her eccentricity is mild at most and is neither rudeness nor necessarily a net negative. In my personal opinion, mild eccentricity very often comes along with high competence--especially, I would think, in a discipline devoted to understanding all forms of human eccentricity.
In any case, Dr. Roberts was able to pinpoint an important aspect of my psychological profile that I did not expect her to identify. Because she clearly is the type of doctor to prefer both medication and therapy over one extreme or the other, as many doctors unfortunately do, I look forward to further sessions and don't think it is at all unreasonable that she expects compensation for her services. I'll, of course, have to withhold full judgment until a few more sessions, but so far I suspect Dr. Roberts is a good egg.
There were also two beautiful, affectionate, and well-trained Border Collies in her office to greet us. The dogs interestingly came to my side during my answers and explanations to Dr. Roberts in the first portion of the the session. Curiously, they subsequently wandered off quietly and calmly to sleep once I was settled and finished giving my back story. That may be a coincidence but I suspect it could have easily been the product of their deliberate, clever training as therapy dogs, which I really found pleasant either way.
While I confess a bias because of the Border Collie in my own household and certainly understand if you would prefer a sterile environment (there are numerous large centers in the area for that, or I am sure Dr. Roberts would simply accommodate your preference), I felt their presence was ultimately a major therapeutic positive and showed that Dr. Roberts could potentially be the type to tackle problems from outside the box. I can't speak for anyone else, but while my treatment needs are not as severe as some others', I absolutely know after seeing a handful of doctors over the last twenty years in a few major metropolitan areas that I need a relatively "outside the box" thinker to make treatment worth my time and expense. In other words, I thought it was a great pleasantry and I'm interested in seeing how the next sessions go.
For those who may be more interested in medication management, this was the primary purpose of my visit. I recently moved to the area from out of state and needed my prescription refilled as soon as possible to avoid an abrupt (unsafe) cessation, which I stated up front, and that was not a problem.
