Dr. Goodstein’s training and experience in adult, adolescent, and child psychiatry and in adult, adolescent, and child psychoanalysis, is the broad background on which he can draw in the evaluation and treatment of patients with a wide array of difficulties. He understands that in psychiatry, as in life, one size does not fit all, and each consultation begins with the recognition of the uniqueness of the individual patient, with no pre-set ideas about diagnosis or modality of therapy. His primary approach to treatment is psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy, but he incorporates into his work the benefits of the judicious use of medications.
In addition to his work as diagnostician and therapist, he has served as a consultant to public school systems, clinics, and the courts. He has been involved in volunteer efforts provided to returning servicemen. His views have been reported in the press and numerous media outlets.
Dr. Goodstein is the Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at New York University School of Medicine, where he is a faculty member of the Institute for Psychoanalytic Education and is the Chair of its Division of Child and Adolescent Psychoanalysis. A Distinguished Life Member of the American Psychiatric Association and a Fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, he has served as president of the Psychoanalytic Association of New York, the New Jersey Psychoanalytic Association, and the New Jersey Council on Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Dr. Goodstein is an out-of-network physician, but will provide completed claim forms that can be submitted to insurance carriers for reimbursement.
