Dr. Ivan Castillo has relocated to California from San Antonio, Texas, where he had an active retina practice. He is a board certified Ophthalmologist who completed his Ophthalmology residency at the Medical College of Virginia, followed by a two-year fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery at Retina and Vitreous of Texas, a well-respected retina practice in Houston.
Originally from Bogota, Colombia, Dr. Castillo immigrated to the U.S. in his quest to further his ophthalmology training in order to best serve his patients. In Colombia, he graduated from medical school and completed an Ophthalmology residency at the Universidad Militar Nueva Granada, one of the country's leading medical schools. He proudly served in the Colombian Air Force as a Flight Surgeon and the ophthalmologist in charge of the ocular health of all pilots and airmen. During his military career, he also participated in combat operations as a medical officer and was awarded the "Medalla de Servicios Distinguidos en Orden Publico", the top military medal for distinguished services in combat, bestowed upon him by the President of Colombia.
Throughout his career, Dr. Castillo has worked at internationally respected institutions such as Wills Eye Hospital and he has published peer-reviewed articles in international journals including Ophthalmology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and Survey of Ophthalmology. In addition, he has presented his work at international meetings including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists.
Dr. Castillo is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In his spare time, Dr. Castillo enjoys spending time with his wife, traveling, reading and studying military history.
