Dr. Algus is professional but warm. I was nervous about my first appointment, but it went fine. She is cautious with prescriptions but open to trying different medications. And she is really easy to work with--very responsive by phone, text, and email. Dr. Algus is also great with recommendations and practical solutions, which I really appreciate.

Manhattan-based psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Dr. Jane Algus specializes in helping clients cope with life challenges and emotional issues. A medically trained and board-certified psychiatrist, Dr. Algus utilizes a compassionate, individualized, and integrative approach to patient care.
Dr. Algus has been in private practice since 2000, and currently sees clients at her Midtown Manhattan office. She is on the faculty of New York University Medical Center, where she is Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, and at Lenox Hill Hospital, where she teaches and supervises residents in psychotherapy and psychiatry.
Dr. Algus graduated from the residency program in Psychiatry at NYU Medical Center in 1990 and later completed a two-year fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry, where she was chief fellow and received a grant from the American Cancer Society.
In 2005, Dr. Algus completed her psychoanalytic training at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute and Society, where she is presently on faculty. She is also on the faculty of the Institute for Psychoanalytic Education, which is affiliated with NYU Medical Center.

Dr. Algus has been a saving grace and extraordinarily impactful during a difficult patch in my life. I was referred to her in relatively "emergency" situation and she immediately fit me into her schedule. She went above and beyond by calling to check-in on me everyday. She was extremely thorough in providing the correct medications and explaining the treatment plan as well as adjusting as necessary to help me get back on track. She has been very accessible, genuinely cares and makes the effort so you truly feel she is looking out for you, your health and your best interests. I would highly recommend Dr. Algus.

Doctor is not helpful. Often checks phone, same phone she swipes your credit card on at the end. Absolutely no advice given, and prices the sessions arbitrarily. Charges for therapy but does not actually act as therapist. Would absolutely not recommend. Fine if you just want meds, but not great for anything else. Seems only interested in charging you the most possible each session.

Dr. Algus is a warm, caring, knowledgeable professional. Her impeccable medical credentials and expertise (NYU Langone/Sloan Kettering Fellow, etc.) are beyond reproach. Most importantly to me, she listens with an open mind and focuses her treatment plan on what is best for me. For example, I am very anti-medication and Dr. Algus has helped me to reduce the medication I was taking and works with me toward my goal of being medication free. In addition, she works well with my other health care providers to coordinate my care. She is very accessible -- both during and after hours-- which is a real plus for me. I would recommend Dr. Algus without hesitation to anyone who is seeking a skilled, caring, top-tier psychiatrist who puts you at ease from the start.

Dr Algus is highly skilled, compassionate, patient, smart and funny. She's psychoanalytic and oriented toward problem solving at the same time. Just as important as her focus and attention in session is her flexibility and availability out of session in difficult moments. Finally she has a very high standard for integrity in a profession where integriry is critical. She helped me save my life in a very challenging situation. I've seen Dr. Algus for about 2 months and she has been such a blessing. I truly appreciate her approach to treatment using both medication and therapy. She guided me through an extremely difficult time in my life and helped me realize things about myself that I did not know before. She is very responsive and communicates outside of appointment hours if necessary. I would highly recommend Dr. Algus to anyone!

I have been seeing Dr. Algus for about two and a half years. I can't say enough good things about her. She is deeply smart and profoundly funny, as well as being highly compassionate. Her analytic training allows her to see beyond the surface of the statements you make in treatment, but not in a condescending or aggressive way. She is focused on being constructive and helpful.
She's extremely practical, and a lot of our treatment has centered on building structures that allow me to live the best life possible. This is not to say she couldn't talk Freudian theory all day; she could. But at least with me, her treatment is focused on the day-to-day victories.
She is very accessible in times of emergency and goes above and beyond (she had a session with my parents once!). Not all therapists are right for all patients, but she has been a wonderful fit for me, and for that I am eternally grateful.

I have been seeing Dr. Algus for several months, and I really like her. Because of several moves around the country I have encountered a number of psychiatrists, and she has been the most helpful and engaged of all. She seems to maintain just the right balance between warmth and professionalism. She is easy to talk to and broad-minded, and she laughs at my lame jokes. While her treatment approach of course includes talk therapy and medication as needed, it also emphasizes practical, not-too-difficult-to-implement suggestions that I have found surprisingly effective. I also appreciate the little courtesies she extends which show respect for the patient, such as being prompt and easy to contact. I think she would connect well with young adults, as well as older folks like myself. I highly recommend Dr. Algus.

The calm intellect that Dr Algus provides is in line with the type of therapy I'm looking for. Sessions begin and end on time. Office is clean and professional. Always accessible via phone, email and text which is a big plus.
