Getting to know Dr. Yihou (Mike) Zhou

**Please note that I am an out-of-network provider. Please expect a phone call within 24 hours of your booking to discuss what to expect at your first session** Hello, and welcome. My name is Mike Zhou, and I’m a psychiatrist and psychotherapist currently accepting new patients NY, NJ, CT, and CA. We all face challenges in our mental health and starting a conversation can feel daunting. My goal is to bring warmth, expertise, and open-mindedness to every interaction to create a space where we can work together to make sense of your situation and to create a plan for change. My approach to treatment is highly personalized around your circumstances, strengths, goals, and life experiences. I prescribe medications where they align with evidence-based guidelines and with the individual’s needs and preferences. I offer weekly or twice-weekly psychotherapy. I work with individuals struggling with a range of psychiatric conditions including depression, anxiety, trauma, bipolar disorder, psychosis, addiction, and personality disorders, as well as those with issues related to work and relationships, challenging habits and intense emotions, and finding joy and resilience. I have a particular passion and expertise in working with Asian-Americans and those with an immigrant background as they navigate cultural identity, family expectations, and personal growth. My work is influenced by my training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, trauma-informed care, and my own experiences as a first generation immigrant. I am fluent in Mandarin Chinese. Outside of private practice, I am the medical director of mental health clinic specialized in supporting the Asian-American community as well as an attending physician in the Mount Sinai network where I supervise residents in training.

Personally found this provider abrasive, judgmental, and unprofessional. As a clinician myself, I would not recommend this provider.

I know first hand how difficult it is to find a great psychiatrist, especially so when the pressures of life have boiled over into paralysis, making the simplest of tasks feel impossible. That’s why after consulting with Dr. Zhou, I was so relieved that help and treatment was on the way. Throughout our sessions, Dr. Zhou helped me disentangle the many triggers for my anxiety - and there were many: work stress, body image issues, financial stress, family drama, low self-esteem, among others. We worked on relieving the immediate pressure of the acute stressors and then focused on the deeper but simmering issues. There is no ready-made fix for everything but with guided effort and psychotherapy, Dr. Zhou helped me build steady momentum in addressing these issues. I recognize now that the hardest step was reaching out for help, and I’m glad I did with Dr. Zhou.
I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Zhou. He is prompt and very well organized. I had the pleasure of scheduling a virtual consult with him during the pandemic, and he was able to provide everything I needed in a timely manner. Definitely a friendly and reliable doctor you can trust.
Dr. Yihou Zhou helped us out tremendously during the coronavirus. My brother requires medication daily but his primary care doctor went MIA during the coronavirus pandemic. And as the entire country was on lockdown from March-June, it was very difficult to find a doctor willing to administer and prescribe the medications. We had a one-hour teledoc conference call with Dr. Zhou and everything went very smoothly. My family is very grateful to have found Dr. Zhou and we highly recommend him. He's professional and is very patient, will answer to all your concerns.
Dr. Zhou has been very professional, kind and trustworthy. During my consultation session, I feel very comfortable sharing my situation and what my feelings are. He's very patient and gentle, which made me feel safe and being trusted and valued. I will definitely schedule session with him again while observing my daily situation and improvement.
Having Dr. Zhou was a great experience to say the least and I would do it all over again if I could. Our time together always felt important and I would leave every session feeling valued by him. I find it rare to experience a doctor that genuinely cares about your well being and your mental progress, I had no doubt that he did. He was always on time to see me and always kept it professional without making the sessions feel tense, I was always at ease and never felt unheard.
Dr. Zhou is insightful, kind, and talented. IHe really helped me with my problems and issues, and I trust him. My life has improved greatly as a result, and I am grateful.
