Dr. Birkel is originally from Portland, Oregon and completed his undergraduate training in Environmental Science at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He received his Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine from the College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Des Moines University followed by a three-year residency in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center Pinnacle Health program in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Dr. Birkel is excited to join 1Foot 2Foot after three years in practice on the Penninsula. He will be spending most of his time at our new Virginia Beach location. He specializes in wound care, amputation prevention and sports medicine. He is married to his best friend Hillary and they have 4 daughters together. They enjoy exploring the outdoors together and tending to and eating from their vegetable garden. Dr. Birkel is an avid reader and can typically be found tucked in a corner somewhere reading a good book. Fun Fact: Dr. Birkel and Dr. Carroll were friends and classmates in medical school.
