Dr. Sumner completed a post-baccalaureate fellowship at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke specializing in cortical physiology and went on to earn a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Brigham Young University with an emphasis on neuropsychology. She completed an APA accredited internship in clinical neuropsychology and a postdoctoral research fellowship in neuropsychology at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. She is currently a Project Scientist in the UC San Diego School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Adjunct Faculty at the University of San Diego.
Dr. Jennifer Sumner is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with specialty training in neuropsychology. Her primary focus is on cognitive assessment and rehabilitation. Dr. Sumner believes that every neurological injury is unique and requires an individually tailored approach to treatment. This includes a focus on the “whole person” addressing physical, behavioral, emotional, and cognitive functioning.
Dr. Sumner has worked in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation acute care as well as outpatient community clinics and has extensive experience working with individuals who have suffered a variety of neurological injuries including brain tumors, stroke, dementia, neurodevelopmental disorders, and traumatic brain injury. She particularly enjoys participating in early neurorehabilitation interventions like cognitive remediation as well as medical/health counseling, treatment planning, and concussion management.
