Joseph Kimani, NP

Family Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
AZ
My name is Dr. Joseph Kimani, DNP, PMHNP-BC, CEO and Founder of Restorative-Psych Wellness Center. I am ANCC Board certified as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and is licensed in Arizona and New Jersey. I specialize in family psychiatry and addiction treatment. My believe is that mental health is real and no one should carry the stigma associated with mental illness. There is treatment for every mental health ailment that exist; never suffer alone, come and seek help, there is hope, and at Restorative Psych Wellness Center, Optimal care is our passion. My approach Since there are several theoretical approaches to mental health treatment each providing different framework for understanding and addressing the mental health issues, I commonly use a combination of cognitive Behavioral therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Biological/Psychopharmacological Approach in most of my treatment modalities because these theoretical approaches touch almost every area of concerns to most patients, and include the use of medication as part of treatment when called for. I also apply Trauma-informed therapy for those who have undergone trauma and suffers from PTSD as well as Family and System Therapy when addressing family related issues to mental health. My focus I am licensed to treat patients across the life span, and therefore, I have extensive experience across all age groups, from children and adolescents to adults and geriatric patients, dealing with a spectrum of psychiatric and mental health disorders as well as addiction/substance abuse. I prescribe Suboxone and also administer Vivitrol injection. I will however, deal mostly with adults, but geriatrics are welcome to make appointment as well.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My journey to mental healthcare I was born and raised in Kenya Africa. Growing up, I went through untold hardships that drove my desire to seek the path in life that would liberate me from the poverty I experienced during my upbringing. Education was the only sure way in this part of the globe that would eventually liberate me the claws of poverty. Because of the poverty and luck of resources, I saw and met many people and families who suffered anxiety, depression, and even to some extent were on the street labeled as " crazy" and walking naked. I never knew what all these was about and was always curious to find an answer as to what type of ailment this was that would lead someone to walk naked and never cared what people said or thought about them. In short, I came from a country where growing up mental illness and psychiatric maladies were never addressed and many people with mental illness walked aimless in the street with no help. I vowed and prayed. and not knowing how and when, that this would be my mission to one day come up with a solution to these problem which were scary to me. I witnessed human beings living on the street corners with no clothes and no food and left to the mercies of the mother nature. I was privileged to get the education I so desired, and I started searching for avenues to reach my goal of one addressing the scourge of people with mental illness. I was blessed to get a green card and migrated to USA where I immediately started consulting with those who were here before me on areas of education that would help me better realized my goals. I was lucky to start working in a group home setting with clients who had TBI back in Jersey about 19years ago.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My goals for you My goal setting approach for patients is based on their treatment needs. I help patients set goals that are meaningful to their treatment needs and which they can achieve within a time frame that is agreeable between the patient and the provider. I allow patients to have time to review and adjust goals and set action plans on what steps to take to reach the goal. Applying the model of SMART Goal Setting helps patients to have a roadmap of their treatment goals. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant to their needs/concerns, and time to accomplish these goals is defined; for example, “by the end of this week, my sleep will improve as I cut down drinking coffee after 4pm.” My first session with you During the first session, patient should expect an introduction of who I am and what I do as well as give them time to introduce themselves in order to build a rapport which is important in establishing a therapeutic relationship from the onset of treatment. I lay down expectations for the treatment as I get to know the patient and their needs, and also being cognizant to their cultural preference if any.
