Joseph T. McDonald is an optimistic and precise internist and primary care doctor working in Bethesda, MD. He graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency. He received additional training in pulmonary and critical care at the Washington Hospital Center.
Dr. McDonald provides care for illnesses and performs annual exams, blood work, and vaccinations. He usually provides outpatient services, but occasionally covers the cardiology inpatient services at Washington Hospital Center. Dr. McDonald is by far THE best medical practitioner I have ever encountered. He does not rush through appointments, cares enough and spends the time necessary to listen carefully to his patients and understand their issues, and is genuinely concerned for his patients well being. Each patient has his full attention and focus during appointments. He is kind, approachable, thorough, honest and down to earth. He put me at ease the moment I met him which is extremely rare, close to unheard of, for me. Treatment plans are well thought out and discussed in detail with the patient before being suggested. He actually makes himself available by phone for questions or concerns which may arise, (and actually returns phone calls!) and same or next day appointments can be made for urgent issues. Combine his friendly, caring and affable personality with the fact that he is a stellar physician and you just can't get any better medical care, anywhere. This is modern medical care with the feeling of old fashioned, personalized, individualized medicine. No patient is just a name or number on today's appointment schedule at Dr. McDonald's office. What a welcome and refreshing change from most practices!
His small, friendly office staff is equally as warm and welcoming. Patients are greeted by name and made to feel at home during what is always only the very short wait to see the doctor. The waiting room is more of a living room in a home than a cold, stark office waiting room.
Truly 5-star experience in every respect. Thank you Dr. McDonald and staff! You are awesome!

I am a new patient, and today was my first visit. I've not had a PCP due to many years of extensive travel for work, and Dr. McDonald did an excellent job of asking thorough questions to get to know me, and allowed me to get to know him. His office is small, clean, comfortable, and very relaxing - I was offered coffee within minutes of arriving, and Dr. McDonald saw me right away. He's friendly, personable, easy to talk to, and listened to me attentively. It is worth noting that his staff is extremely capable and courteous.

The first Time I made an appointment they canceled the next morning and never followed up when I requested a new time and day. The second time I filled out a lengthy online questionnaire and told them what I was looking for including that I was not planning to make Dr. McDonald my primary doctor because I have a lengthy history with another physician tied to my disability. Once I sat down with Dr. McDonald he told me that he would not be my doctor and less I made him my primary physician and took all medical direction from him including managing all medication regardless of whether not specialist prescribed it. He said that he was afraid of legal action that could occur if you didn't manage my medication which is hard to believe since this is a common practice in the industry to have more than one doctor prescribing medication. Unfortunately I invested a considerable amount of time preparing, waiting for the appointment twice. My objectives were clear in what I documented yet no one in Dr. McDonald's office bothered to review the material I submitted. Dr. McDonald is basically trying to have a small set up patients and provide boutique like service to them. This was total waste of time and significant effort.

This was not our first visit to see Dr. McDonald. In each instance of contact with him we have found him to be patient, attentive, and responsive. He is not harried by his schedule. He takes the time for a complete patient history. He asks questions about a patient's desire for treatment and does not push medicines as a panacea. He is not someone who orders batteries of tests and then fails to do anything with the results. His advice made sense to us. He was accessible when we had some follow-up issues. I am a consumer who frequently complains, including in ratings opportunities, but, after spending a year handling some family member medical issues, I think we found a doctor who has the time, skill, and focus to find healing solutions.

This visit was very different from experiences I've had with past PCPs. The office is very tranquil more like the reception area of a spa than a typical Dr.'s office. Office staff was super friendly and brought me a glass of water while I was filling out forms. My actual appointment (1st visit) was close to 1 1/2 hrs. The Dr. asked me questions about my history and the current problem I'm having and took time to discuss his background and service philosophy. He did a physical exam and took blood samples, followed by a discussion of my treatment plan. He's very easy to talk to and has a sense of humor. He seems to have a holistic approach-relying on evidence based solutions but also has an interest in non pharmacological treatments to nourish mind as well as body (in my case, meditation was suggested to relieve anxiety). I am scheduled to go back next week. I highly recommend this practice to anyone who is interested in having a personalized experience with a PCP.

Dr. Joe is my Unicorn PCP. I have a very complex history and he's the first doc to actually take on a coordinating role and, while there's a lot of things with me that can't be 'fixed', Dr. Joe is the first doctor to not make things suck more by ordering endless consults and kicking me out to specialist after specialist.

Met my high standards and expectations. Dr. Joe is knowledgeable, caring and professional. He encouraged me to talk about my medical condition and myself as it is important to him that he "knows" his patients. His office manager and nurse are accommodating and caring as well.
