Emotional problems have as many different sources as there are symptoms, and effective treatment depends on an accurate diagnosis of the major causal factors. My initial goal is to gather enough information to formulate a treatment plan which I then discuss with my patient. Treatment is a joint enterprise and we must work together openly and honestly. I have found that special attention to relational problems -- conflicts arising in the kitchen, the workplace, or the bedroom -- often sharpen details of the diagnosis and provide early avenues of therapeutic influence. But there are no "cookie-cutter" techniques to good treatment. Each suffering person is a unique universe deserving of respect and careful attentive assistance aimed to resolve conflict, thereby to achieve more peace of mind, and techniques of maintaining it.
