The staff was very friendly. The office is clean and beautiful. Our wait was longer because the office was working the "bug out". We understand that. We look forward to working with Dr. Shaikh for years to come. Music in the waiting room could be pleasant.

More about Dr. Khawar Shaikh, MD

For Shaikh, excellence is not just an expectation but the only option. Dr. Shaikh is an Interventional Cardiologist with training in Coronary and Peripheral Arterial Diseases, Endovascular Interventions, Congenital Heart diseases like ASD/PFO closures, treatment for varicose veins and carotid artery interventions. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Interventional Cardiology and Nuclear Cardiology. He joined First Coast Cardiovascular Institute in October 2012. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and Society of Coronary Angiography and Intervention. Dr. Shaikh was born in Pakistan and is the youngest son in a family of seven. Despite their limited means, Dr. Shaikh says, his parents did a wonderful job in raising everyone on a value system based on spirituality, empathy and respect for other human beings regardless of where they come from. Although he wanted to grow up to be an air force pilot, his family was able to convince him to follow tradition and become a doctor. He studied medicine at King Edward Medical College in Lahore, Pakistan and graduated at the top of his class. He did his initial training at University of Tennessee and then moved to Massachusetts for additional training in Interventional Cardiology. A simple promise to run in place of one of his elderly patients who couldn’t run after a cardiac procedure turned into a passion. He trained for 5K’s, 10 K’s, half marathons and regularly participate in race to cure campaigns in support of Breast Cancer awareness; dedicated it to his mother who he lost to breast cancer recently. She always said, “Girtey hein shahsawar hee maidane jang mein, per rustam to wo hey jo gir kay phir utha.” Every hero falls in the battle field but the real hero “Rustam” is the one who gets back up. Every challenge he faces reminds him not to give up but to strive harder. Traveling and learning about other cultures is another one of his passions. “I see a reflection of my family in my patients. I ask myself what would I do if this patient was one of my loved ones?” . Providing good patient care is a team effort but the most important person is the patient him/herself because they have to live with the outcome of the therapy. For this reason, Dr. Shaikh believes in empowering the patients. He thinks of himself as an advisor, educating his patients about their disease, treatment options and outcomes. He has had tremendous success in improving compliance and increasing success of treatment through this approach. Healing is an art, science provides the tools, but true passion is whats needed to deliver. Shaikh says, “It is a father who was supposed to walk his daughter down the aisle or a husband who means everything to someone or a grandmother whose only desire is to see her grandchild graduate. You are not just fixing a blockage in a blood vessel; there is a lot that hinges on it, a life, a family and the bucket list.”
