In my appt note, I specified that the purpose of the appointment is for “reproduction” and “pap smear”. During my appointment, 1. I was told by the practitioner Pap smear is only recommended once every 5 years per guidance, which was not communicated to me before my arrival to help me decide if the appointment was necessary). My last Pap smear was 2 years ago with Eden health. Practitioner specifically told me if I get the Pap smear today instead of 3 years later is not recommended. She said if the result is positive for HPV, it will open another can of worms and “you don’t want that.” I was confused and asked why. She said it will lead to “unnecessary tests”. I further asked why tests responding to a positive HPV test are unnecessary. She said most HPV will get fought off by our bodies, and cancer-causing HPV develop very slowly, so it is not meaningful to get Pap smear today. I asked again what the downsides are if I get the Pap smear today. She said if it’s positive, I will have to get unnecessary tests and biopsy which can exposure me to infections and mental stress. Then I asked, if you don’t recommend Pap smear, is there a check up that you can do to assess the overall health of my reproductive organs? She mentioned Pelvic exam. She told me if I feel fine then it’s necessary to get pelvic exam either. I was left confused. I respect all medical professionals, but I also appreciate well-prepared, informative, thorough and logical arguments from them when I was presented with a medical opinion or recommendation. In today’s case, I do not believe medical recommendations was presented in a professional and timely manner or up to my expectation of Eden Health quality. 2. During my appointment, the practitioner did not ask me basic questions that Eden Health professionals always asked. For example, are you sexually actively, when was your last period, are you on any medication… (considering its visit for reproduction). It made me believe that the “pap smear once 5 years” recommendation was not tailored to me, an individual patient. The appointment at 3 pm on a Friday felt rushed and less thorough compared to my past Eden health appointments. If staff have early plans after work on a Friday, please cancel appointments instead of comprising the quality of medical service. 3. I asked the practitioner if she can refer me to get a fertility test. She consulted the Eden Health team on the spot to figure out where I can get the fertility test and what kind of specialist I need to see. I would expect Eden Health professionals prepare and educate themselves before the appointment based on my past positive experience with Eden Health. 4. I am still confused how often I should get Pap smear plus pelvic exam to be sufficiently and cautiously take cate of my body. Guidelines from top medical research universities including American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG): If you are older than 30 and have had 3 normal Pap tests in a row, you can be tested once every 3 years. I would love to know the source of the “once every 5 years” guideline that the practitioner mentioned to help make an educated decision. 5. The practitioner did try to be helpful and kind by taking me through my last physical exam result and refill my birthday control prescription.
Thank you Kim for your amazing care over that last year. Eden health has been an amazing experience for me.
