Dr. Lawrence Lemak, the Founder of Lemak Sports Medicine & Orthopedics, is a nationally renowned thought leader in the field of sports medicine who devotes his practice primarily toward knee replacement procedures. With a dedication to excellence, Dr. Lemak founded Lemak Sports Medicine & Orthopedics to offer his patients access to expertise in all areas of Orthopedic Surgery and Primary Care Sports Medicine.
Dr. Lemak is an esteemed graduate of The University of Alabama Medical School and he was fortunate to complete his residency at The University of Pittsburgh. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA). Dr. Lemak also served as Chairman of Orthopedic Surgery at USF from 2004-2008.
Dr. Lemak's devotion to sports medicine led him to found and chair the Alabama Sports Foundation in 1996. This foundation focuses on bringing the highest level of sports competition to the Birmingham, Alabama area, such as the 1996 Olympic Soccer Games. In addition, he was a founder of the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI), a research and education institute for sports medicine, which has produced volumes of research for sports medicine and has educated over 250 orthopedic surgeons and family practitioners in the specialty of sports medicine.
Due to his high level of expertise and involvement, Dr. Lemak currently serves as a Medical Advisor to over 10 orthopedic medical companies and is the standing medical director for Community Health Systems. Further, Dr. Lemak has served as the Medical Director of the NFL's European League for over 15 years, the Medical Director for Major League Soccer for 17 years as well as serving as the current Medical Director of the United Football League. In this capacity Dr. Lemak has cared for over 2,000 professional football players. However, his dedication to serving athletes is not restricted to professional. Dr. Lemak is also the team physician for many high schools and colleges throughout Alabama.
Dr. Lemak has been married to his wife Georgine for 48 years and they have three children—John, David, and Matthew and seven grandchildren who all reside in Birmingham. In his free time, Dr. Lemak is a serial entrepreneur, travels extensively and is busy raising two Golden Retrievers.
