Among the most commonly overlooked contributors to underachieving in the classroom is compromised vision. Good vision is not only essential to reading comprehension, but is critical to understanding the lesson being taught on chalk boards, white boards, video screens and Smart boards. Far too often children who are identified as being inattentive or disruptive in a classroom setting are in need of vision correction.
Dr. Surber attended Parkland College on a softball scholarship and earned her Associates Degree in Science. During her two years there, her team earned fifth and second place at the National Softball Tournament. She then transferred to Southern Illinois University and earned a Bachelors Degree in Biology. Knowing from high school that Optometry was the field she wanted to work in, she attended the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. During her studies, she worked in the city and suburbs in different areas including Low Vision, Ocular Disease, Pediatrics, Vision Therapy, Developmental Disabilities, and Contact Lenses. She also has a vast understanding of Vision Therapy techniques.
