Finding a good psychiatrist is hard! BACKGROUND: Lila Elizabeth Massoumi, MD, is an integrative-holistic psychiatrist. She has training in advanced psychopharmacology (conventional medicine), in addition to certification in “Integrative-Holistic Medicine” (www.ABIHM.org). As an integrative-medicine psychiatrist, Dr Massoumi can recommend nutritional supplements, herbals, and natural or alternative treatment modalities. Dr Massoumi is the chair of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Caucus on Complementary, Alternative, & Integrative Medicine (www.IntPsychiatry.com). She is the medical director of Michigan Integrative Holistic Psychiatry (www.DrLMassoumi.com), and the recent chair of the Psychiatry Department of an underserved inner-city hospital. PATIENTS SEEN: Adults ages 18+. Specialty in women of childbearing age. SERVICES: An initial office visit (aka “psychiatric evaluation”) is 90 minutes. Your visit will conclude with education on the various factors that appear to have contributed to the development of your symptoms (e.g. genetic, medical, childhood experiences, active life stressors). You will also be taught the pros and cons of various holistic (natural) and conventional-medical treatment options. Follow up appointments are generally scheduled for 1 - 6 weeks following your initial visit, and are 30 minutes. Once you are feeling well, your follow-up visits will be approximately every 3 months. COUNSELING: Dr Massoumi does not herself offer counseling, other than of the straightforward education type. Rather, she will work with the counselor you are currently seeing, or if you are not in active counseling and it is decided that you could benefit from this, you will be referred to (extremely competent) therapists in the community.
