Dr. Mathew obtained his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and subsequently received all of his psychiatric training from the Columbia University Medical Center Department of Psychiatry (New York Presbyterian Hospital), where he completed his residency in general (‘adult’) Psychiatry and his fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He is Board Certified in both Psychiatry and in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He favors an approach to psychiatric evaluation and treatment that can generally be described as cautious and evidence-based. After completing his training, he moved to New England and has been in practice for about eight years, in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
A few notes from Dr. Mathew:
Please note that while I fully support all persons in recovery from alcohol and substance abuse, an Addiction Psychiatrist would be a better treatment choice if you have relapsed recently or have less than 5 years of recovery behind you.
Regarding controlled substances:
- ADHD: I am very cautious in treating ADHD with controlled substances if you only started medication treatment as an adult (> 18 y.o.) In some cases, I will request documentation of past medical history to support the need for current medication treatment.
- Benzodiazepines: These are prescribed cautiously, and for some patients, only for short time intervals.
- Pain Medications: I do not prescribe medications for pain relief.
