Dr. Zachary Millman, PhD

Psychologist
MA
I am an Assistant Psychologist at McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA, Director of Research for McLean’s Support, Treatment, and Resilience (STAR) program, and an Instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. I received my Ph.D. in Clinical Child Psychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and I completed an APA-approved predoctoral internship as well as a postdoctoral fellowship at McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School. In addition to providing psychological assessment services for adolescents and adults in the Psychotic Disorders Division, I have provided individual psychotherapy services through several outpatient, partial hospital, and community-based programs on campus. I am also an active mental health researcher with a focus on understanding possible early signs of psychosis, depression, and anxiety. My research is currently funded by the National Institute of Mental Health. Outside of my hospital activities, I maintain a small private practice. I offer two kinds of services: (1) psychological assessment and (2) psychotherapy. The assessment services are designed to provide a detailed clinical formulation of the kinds of problems you may be having (including but not limited to psychiatric diagnoses) as well as your psychosocial strengths, and to provide personalized treatment recommendations. Psychotherapy services involve treatment sessions in which we work together over a course of sessions to solve a particular problem you may be having, foster new or existing coping skills, or manage mental health concerns you may be experiencing. I am a Licensed Psychologist and a Health Service Provider in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (license number 5000303). I adhere to all ethical guidelines established by the American Psychological Association.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a child, adolescent, and adult psychologist. My specialization is in the adolescent and young adult period, a time of significant developmental change. I hold expertise in the assessment and treatment of mood, anxiety, and psychotic disorders, but clients do not need to be diagnosed with one of these disorders to be a good fit for my practice. We will work together to see if my practice is right for you or your loved one. My approach rests on a person-centered and developmentally informed foundation. I emphasize a collaborative spirit, seeking to honor my clients’ agency and independence by supporting a culture of hope, optimism, and shared decision-making, all while respecting clients’ right to candid professional feedback. I see growth and recovery as dimensional and nonlinear. People may shift in and out of wellness throughout their lifespan, functioning adaptively in some domains and stages of life and maladaptively in others. Shifts into maladaptation, despite their inherent challenges, are learning opportunities. To be the best clinician I can be demands that I am attentive, flexible, and competent in more than one treatment modality. In this context, I focus on cognitive, behavioral, and family systems models of care. These approaches often involve psychoeducation (e.g., education about risk and protective factors in mental health), behavioral experiments (e.g., testing a new skill in the real world), cognitive restructuring (e.g., identifying and reworking unhelpful thought patterns), and mindfulness (maintaining awareness, without judgment, of one’s own experience). I use the available scientific evidence to integrate and match these gold standard treatment components to my clients’ stated needs and priorities. I view myself as a resource for people who want to feel better. My goal for those I have the privilege of serving is that they become capable of doing for themselves what they once sought from me.
