More about Dr. Madalyn Schaefgen, MD

Philosophy of care I believe in providing quality family medicine to all of my patients. Family medicine works to improve the health of patients, their families and their communities. As a family physician, I care for newborns to the very elderly, and everyone in between. I am concerned about whatever concerns you: the ingrown toenail, the prevention of stroke, caring for your diabetes and hypertension, providing wellness care and immunizations. I enjoy learning about your family. This means that I care for the whole person, not just a part. If I cannot provide the care that a person needs, I work to make sure that the patient is referred to someone who can render that care. Why I entered medicine Like many physicians, I entered medicine due to a fascination with science and learning how the body works, and a yearning to be able to make people feel better when they are unwell. Time and again, I am still amazed at our fantastic bodies and how they function. I am amazed at how much medicine has changed and yet how much it has remained the same. And it’s that sameness, the humanness and emotional aspect to illness and life and death that makes it all so very rewarding. Community involvement I am very involved in the organizational aspects of family medicine outside of the office. I have been an officer and president of the Lehigh Valley Chapter of Family Physicians, officer and President of the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians, and I am currently on a committee of Health of the Public and Science for the American Academy of Family Physicians. I am also presently an alternate delegate to our annual Congress of Delegates for the American Academy of Family Physicians. I am working to make family medicine better, and more accessible to all. In my younger years, I was a Cub Scout leader, and I started the first Tiger Cubs in the area. I was a Girl Scout Leader and took the girls camping. I was a helper at many sporting events for my children. Personal interests I enjoy being outdoors: hiking, camping, swimming, and kayaking. I also love to travel. Photographing the places I’ve been is another passion. You may likely see some of my pictures on the office walls.
