Dr. Maria Jefferson-Walker, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC has 23 years of healthcare experience. Currently, she is a practicing Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). Maria earned a Doctorate in Nursing Practice in 2019 from the University of St. Francis in Joliet, IL. She earned her first Masters of Science degree in nursing, with an education focus in 2007 from Olivet Nazarene University, Bourbonnais, IL. She then returned to Olivet Nazarene University and received a second Master’s of Science in Nursing in 2013, which led to her becoming a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP).
Maria has spent many years as a staff nurse on medical/surgical, emergency department and labor and delivery units. She also worked in the community as a Certified School Nurse for Chicago Public Schools. A proponent of giving back to the profession of nursing, Maria served as an Assistant Professor at Resurrection University an upper division school of nursing, facilitating learning for undergraduate and graduate nursing students. As a FNP, she promotes a proactive as opposed to a reactive approach to healthcare and manages acute and chronic medical conditions of families across the lifespan. She focuses on culturally sensitive disease prevention and behavioral health by providing patient education and empowering families to make informed decisions, remain accountable, and full participants in their plan of care.
Maria participates in nursing research and has presented on both local and international platforms. As a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society, she traveled to the “International Research Congress 2014,” in Hong Kong to present her nursing research,” Parents Perception of Recommendation of the HPV Vaccination for Adolescent Children.” As a Co-Owner of Hope Wellness Group a 501(c) 3 organization, Maria has worked in partnership with inner city schools and performed free required physical exams to help increase medical compliance and keep students in school.
Maria is very proud of her 2017 accomplishment as the founder and CEO of “Hope Wellness Center & Spa.” She has joined a community of innovators that are practicing Direct Primary Care, subscription based affordable health care. Maria’s focus is on providing improved access to high quality primary care. Her goal is to restore the “caring and compassion” in health care. Hope Wellness Center & Spa has helped Maria find the “peace in her passion,” and she believes that with time people will regain their expectation of high quality, patient centered health care.
Maria considers herself a visionary, excited about unlimited possibilities, empowering professional nurses to maximize autonomy through persistence and perseverance. She is a passionate educator, mentor, and consultant resulting in leaders and entrepreneurs in healthcare. As a leader in healthcare, Maria started the work in order to get nurse practitioners recognized in scholarly literature as providers/owners of direct primary care practices. She started a private Facebook group, “Nurse Practitioners (NP) in Direct Primary Care (DPC),” a resource hub that supports NPs as entrepreneurs following the model. To date there are 1.5K members in the group from across the country.
In 2019, Maria continues to establish herself as a leader in healthcare. She has been elected to the Executive Board of Directors of the Illinois Society of Advanced Practice Nurses (ISAPN) as Treasurer. Her most recent accomplishment is being nominated and awarded the 2020 American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) Advocate State Award for Excellence from Illinois. She will be recognized for this honor at the AANP National Conference in New Orleans, June 2020.
Maria is a City of Chicago resident, a wife to Dr. Eric Walker, Ed.D for over 22 years and proud mother of four boys. Dr. Maria is a wonderful person who is attentive, understanding, compassionate and truly- for her patients. I felt so comfortable in her office. Not only was her individual office up to date and charming, it was very personal one on one. Your not sitting with ANY other people feeling crowded or like anyone is starting at you wondering if you’re going to be next or them. She keeps appointment slots strictly for 1 patient at a time and I love that. No wait time. She is a doctor that cares about her patients well being. She will ask you questions and get to the root of whatever the problem is. I felt very safe with her and her knowledge confirmed she was the right woman for the job. It’s hard to find doctors that have the patience, but she definitely does. Wonderful woman and I am so great full to have found her and to continue under her care.
