Mark Sammons, PhD is an experienced, attentive psychologist with a creative and holistic approach to treating his patients in New York City. He began his clinical education at Columbia University with a Master’s in developmental psychology, before earning his PhD in clinical psychology from Adelphi University and postdoctoral certificate in psychoanalysis at the Derner Institute.
Dr. Sammons' approach to therapy draws from a wide range of sources including Western and Eastern philosophy, poetry, and popular culture while grounded in contemporary psychological theory to best meet the needs of his patients. A number of his patients have a background in meditation or yoga, or have an interest in Buddhist studies, in which Dr. Sammons received four years of formal training at San Francisco Zen Center. In addition to individual and couples therapy, Dr. Sammons conducts groups, and has received training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy.
Before establishing a private practice, Dr. Sammons served as Clinical Director of the Village Institute for Psychotherapy where he supervised the clinical work and training of a staff of psychologists and social workers. Dr. Sammons serves on the postgraduate faculty of the Derner Institute, Adelphi University, and on the faculty of the Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, where he continues his involvement in the clinical education of early career psychotherapists. He is a member of the Adelphi Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, and the Eastern Group Psychotherapy Association.
Dr. Sammons is married to a psychologist, with whom he shares an office so they can actively co-parent their two children. In his spare time, he enjoys organic gardening and cooking.
