More about Dr. Michael Cassaro, MD

Dr. Cassaro is an engineer who became a physician. Engineering minds are conditioned to discover problems, define the problems, and solve the problems. Dr. Cassaro has put his engineering mind to work solving the problems of chronic pain. The result is that Dr. Cassaro has helped countless patients to live healthier and more enjoyable lives without constant pain. Dr. Cassaro specializes in lifelong wellness. Effective pain treatment is a combined effort between Dr. Cassaro and his patients. Dr. Cassaro works closely with patients to achieve long-term pain relief goals. The human body is an engineering marvel. When a patient comes to Dr. Cassaro with a pain problem, Dr. Cassaro approaches the solution from an engineering perspective. First, he looks at the whole person, not just the spot that hurts. Then Dr. Cassaro evaluates all of the structural and functional flaws that can contribute to the particular pain problems encountered. Using this approach, the sources of pain can be identified. Dr. Cassaro then treats the sources of pain rather than just the symptom of pain. The goal is lasting relief. The goal is to help the person recover without a lifetime dependence on Dr. Cassaro, medications, or other doctors, hospitals, etc. While Dr. Cassaro was still in residency training, at the prestigious Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, he began to notice that people almost never have just one problem. He remembers conversations with his fellow residents about how problems seem to come as "package deals". The components of the package were predictable. They were usually the same. Over the past twenty five years, Dr. Cassaro has been researching the metabolic relationships that link the associated problems. A person comes to see Dr. Cassaro because something hurts. But there was usually some underlying problem that either led to the onset of the pain, or interfered with normal healing and recovery from an injury or illness. Instead of just treating the thing that hurts, Dr. Cassaro searches for the underlying problem and treats it. The pain can be halted as well as the underlying process. Simple pain relief leaves the underlying process to continue in the background, undetected. The underlying process can reemerge with the return of the same pain, or as a new pain somewhere else, or even as a more serious medical or surgical problem. Uncovering the underlying process, and providing appropriate treatment can stop the process. All of the later effects are then prevented. Dr. Cassaro's approach to people with chronic pain problems spans a good part of the spectrum of traditional medical disciplines. The traditional approach of modern medicine is to have a heart doctor that looks after a person's heart, a bone and joint doctor who looks after the bones and joints, a diabetes doctor who looks at the blood sugar, a lung doctor who looks after the breathing, etc. But, in our modern medicine model, there is nobody who looks after the whole person. There is nobody who links problems in one area with symptoms in another area. Part of Dr. Cassaro's approach to a person's chronic pain problem is to assimilate all of the relationships of each of the different "departments" to get to the source of the person's pain. With the source in his sights, Dr. Cassaro takes aim at real improvement, not just symptomatic relief.
