Dr. Natalie Gugino is originally from Upstate New York. She attended SUNY Buffalo for her undergraduate education, and graduated summa cum laude with her Bachelors of Science in Biomedical Science 2011. She then went on to attend the SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine, now called the Jacobs School of Medicine, from 2011 to 2015.
She chose to stay in Buffalo for her residency in General Psychiatry because of their excellence in teaching and their Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP). During residency she served as the Chief for the Resident Psychotherapy Clinic, and gave her grand rounds presentation on the interrelation between trauma and psychosis. She graduated in 2019 and moved to Arlington, Virginia, where she completed her fellowship in Consultation Liaison (CL) Psychiatry at INOVA Fairfax Medical Center, through George Washington University, focusing on the overlap between psychiatry and medical/physical illness. Whilst there, she also worked as a psychiatrist at an INOVA HIV Clinic, and facilitated a metastatic breast cancer support group. She attained her board certification in General Psychiatry in 2020. She graduated from CL fellowship in 2020 and then began working at INOVA Behavioral Health as a staff psychiatrist. She managed a spectrum of disease with a caseload of over 600 patients, from high functioning major depression and generalized anxiety disorders, to refractory schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. She managed a number of cases involving intellectual disability, dementia with behaviors, and perinatal maternal psychiatric illness. She also supervised the CL fellows for their weekly table rounds to discuss challenging cases.
Dr. Gugino’s approach to mental health goes beyond medications. Therapeutic rapport is most important and the cornerstone of good treatment. With her CL background, she will often recommend a medical workup if necessary before commencing treatment.

This was my first time meeting w/ a psychiatrist and Dr. Gugino exceeded my (nervous!) expectations. The entire appointment, I was thinking "why haven't I done this sooner?"
Dr. Gugino genuinely listened and responded, asked questions and gave wonderful feedback. She also was very reassuring and affirming. Dr. Gugino also recommended treatment options that felt appropriate and reasonable to me and I'm looking forward to pursuing those options.
I will meet with Dr. Gugino again. Just knowing that I have a future appointment with her puts my mind at ease.
