More about Dr. Peter Nussbaum, MD
Peter Nussbaum, M.D., is chief of Ophthalmology at the Saint Barnabas Medical Center and Saint Barnabas Outpatient Centers as well as a Livingston eye physician and surgeon for over 30 years. He is the third generation of physicians in his family to be affiliated with Saint Barnabas. He is a 1969 graduate of New York Medical College where he also did his residency and a glaucoma research fellowship. He was Chief Resident during his final year there. Dr. Nussbaum is “board certified” by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Teaching has always been a passion for Dr. Nussbaum. From 1979 to 1986 he taught eye surgery at New York University School of Medicine. Now, he is clinical assistant professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He has frequently lectured to Saint Barnabas house staff and been invited to speak before other physician groups.
Dr. Nussbaum is a past-president of the New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology, our state’s specialty society. He is still on the Academy’s executive committee. On the national level, Dr. Nussbaum serves on the Council of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Through both these societies, he is actively involved in the political process locally and nationally to advocate for the best medical care for the people of New Jersey.
In 2005, New Jersey’s governor appointed Dr. Nussbaum to the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners. Other board positions include the Saint Barnabas Foundation, the Lions Eye Bank of New Jersey, and the Township of Livingston’s Health Advisory Committee.
Dr. Nussbaum and his wife, Murie, a professional medical photographer, live in Livingston since 1979. They have two grown daughters and Stanley, their yellow Labrador retriever.
