Dr. Felig was born in New York City. He received his undergraduate education at Princeton University, from which he graduated magna cum laude. He then attended the Yale University School of Medicine, where he was awarded the Anatomy Prize and the Campbell Prize for highest standing in the examinations of the course.
Following medical school, Dr. Felig did his residency at the Yale/New Haven Hospital, where he rose to be Chief Resident in Medicine.
Dr. Felig received his training in Endocrinology at the Harvard Medical School Elliott P. Joslin Research Laboratory and at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
Dr. Felig also served two years in the United States Air Force in the rank of captain. He performed his military service at the Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Base, where he was in charge of a research program on the effects of a pure oxygen environment. At that time, U.S. spacecraft used a pure oxygen environment whose safety was the subject of research and publications by Dr. Felig.
Following his training, Dr. Felig joined the faculty of the Yale University School of Medicine as an assistant professor and rose to full professorship. Dr. Felig served as Chief of Endocrinology at Yale and Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine.
While at Yale, Dr. Felig headed a research team whose focus was on glucose (sugar) metabolism. The team was the first to demonstrate the effectiveness of an insulin pump in the management of type I diabetes mellitus. Dr. Felig also did research on changes in glucose metabolism in type II diabetes and in obesity.
Dr. Felig’s research endeavors have resulted in over 260 publications, consisting of original articles, reviews and books.
