Dr. Richard Chen is a Board Certified Family Medicine physician who has been caring for patients of all ages and demographics since 1993. Over the past several years he has dedicated himself to the training and practice of Functional Medicine after seeing this approach effectively heal those in his own life.
Richard’s career in healthcare was inspired by his father who is also a physician. Richard completed his undergraduate and medical degrees in an accelerated program at Albany Medical College in New York. He then went on to complete his medical internship and residency at Somerset Medical Center in New Jersey.
His passion for his work as a doctor reached new heights when he discovered Functional Medicine. This patient-centered approach to medicine caused him to reevaluate his role in the lives of his patients and motivated him to strive more toward supporting each individual's goals through improving their health. In alignment with the core concepts of Functional Medicine, Richard enjoys listening to his patients and working with them to get to the root cause of their health concerns.
Richard’s training at the Institute for Functional Medicine taught him that focusing on supporting the whole person and his/her biological processes rather than working to identify and fix any one disease, results in better health outcomes and improved patient satisfaction. In regards to Functional Medicine Richard states, “It is the way medicine should be.”
Richard’s philosophy is that a patient-doctor relationship is one in which each party trusts the other.
