Cowan is a native of Hillsboro, Texas and completed his undergraduate work in biology at The University of Texas in 1987. He earned his medical degree at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. His residency in obstetrics and gynecology was completed at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth in 1995, where he was chief resident.
Dr. Cowan joined Austin Area Obstetrics, Gynecology & Fertility in 2000. He is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is a member of the Texas Medical Association and serves on the executive board of both the Travis County Medical Society and the Blood and Tissue Center in Austin. He is also an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology for the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.
Dr. Cowan is a popular physician in the community and has been a speaker for women’s issues many times. He is a frequent guest on television and radio programs. He and his wife Julie have three children, Rob, Will, and Katie.
Dr. Cowan is assisted by Jennifer Vasquez, WHNP-BC. With more than 17 years of experience in women’s health, Jen Vasquez has spent over 14 years in OBGYN practice. She is a Registered Advanced Practice Nurse in the state of Texas, and is certified as a Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner by the National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecological, and Neonatal Nurse Specialties.
Jen obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonion 1994. She has been practicing as a WHNP since 1997 after graduating from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio with a Maste

Even though I was late to my appointment, I was seen quickly after checking in. The receptionists, nurses, and Dr. Cowan were all very friendly and comforting. The actual appointment was fast--almost too fast for my liking since I barely got to ask my most important question before the doctor slipped out of the room. But I did get all of my questions more or less answered and made a follow-up appointment before leaving.
