He completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at Michigan State University Affiliated Hospitals in Lansing, Michigan. He was an attending Emergency Medicine Physician at St. Lawerence Hospital in Lansing, Michigan and was an assistant professor in Emergency Medicine at MSU-COM. In 1989 Dr. Maio took a position in Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS). He was active in clinical care, medical education, medical research and research regulatory compliance. His administrative positions have included Associate Chair for Research for the Department of Emergency Medicine, Assistant Dean for Research Regulatory Affairs at UMMS and Director of the Office of Human Research Compliance Review (OHRCR) in the Office of the Vice-President for Research. In July 2013, Dr. Maio retired from UM as a Professor Emeritus.
