Sharlene was born and raised in the Midwest. She completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota in genetics and cell-biology but through her community service with Minneapolis’s homeless population, she became interested in health care as a means of working for social and economic justice. This led her to spend a year living in Kenya working with an organization called African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) where she devoted her time investigating the main determinants of health and wellness in the Maasai women, a group of individuals that had historically been marginalized.
Sharlene then completed her medical degree at Kansas City University of Medicine. She also earned a master’s degree in bioethics, focusing on end of life care in homeless populations. During her medical training, she balanced her rigorous academic demands with her spirituality and commitment for community involvement. She started practicing yoga and witnessed the connection of the mind, body and spirit in wellness. This shaped her practice of health care delivery and encouraged her to pursue Family Medicine.
Sharlene enjoys spending time with her best friend and husband - Justin - doing things like camping, hiking, snowshoeing, running, cycling or anything outdoors. She also enjoys yoga, meditation and religious exploration. Sharlene likes to cook and eat vegetarian and will never turn down a good cup of coffee. On rainy days, she can be found playing board games or watching her favorite television show (Friends) on repeat.
