More about Dr. Stephen Beckwith, MD

I grew up back east, but it seems that I’ve been in steady motion for the last 20 years. After college at West Point, I was off to Emory University for medical school. There I met my business partner, Matt Gillett. We shared an interest in mountaineering and travel. This led to a few disastrous expeditions around the globe, but solidified a great friendship in the process. I did my residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Arizona. This was a busy, urban, Level 1 trauma center, and an excellent place to learn critical patient care skills. After residency, I returned to active duty in the Army. My first station was a small ER in Wurzburg, Germany. Being stationed overseas was an excellent opportunity to grow both culturally and professionally. We were actively involved with the German medical system, and developed an excellent relationship with our clinical counterparts. In 2007 I deployed to Iraq with a Combat Support Hospital. Over the next 15 months I had a chance to provide emergency medical care to soldiers and Iraqis alike. While it was a challenging environment, I was grateful for the opportunity from both a clinical and cultural perspective. I left Iraq with a better appreciation of our shared humanity, and was further inspired to work outside the US when I could. Following my return from Iraq, I transferred to Fort Hood, Texas. Fort Hood is home to the busiest ER in the military, as well as one of the Army’s residency programs. I spent my time there teaching residents, and working closely with our local EMS providers. I was on shift in the ER during the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, and have spoken nationally on the medical response to mass shooting events. In 2010 I deployed to Helmand, Afghanistan. This was certainly the most intense medical experience of my career. For seven months, we provided trauma resuscitation to those injured in the fighting. It was also another opportunity to interact with a vastly different culture, something I have always seen as a blessing. After my time in Helmand, I moved to a small village in the west of the Afghanistan. We provided daily care to the locals and had a chance to work alongside Afghan physicians. There, far removed from the fighting, I had a chance to understand Afghan culture outside of the grip of conflict–an experience I found rejuvenating. In 2014 I left the military. I decided it was time for a long sabbatical, so I set my sights on Latin America. I bought a beat up little truck and decided to drive south until I ran out of road. Over the next 9 months I travelled the length of Central and South America. Along the way, I did some volunteer work, practiced my Spanish, and learned to surf. It was an incredible journey that ended in the southern tip of Patagonia. Refreshed, 15 pounds lighter, and far happier, I returned to the states in 2015. I met my wife shortly thereafter, and got married this summer. We are excited to start our family here in the Bay Area and look forward to making Atlas an excellent resource for our community.
