Stephen Burstein, is a board certified neurosurgeon and the senior attending physician. In addition to his activities in neurosurgery, he has a special interest and expertise in surgical and nonsurgical treatment of the spine, second opinions, and independent insurance examinations. Dr. Burstein offers the new XSTOP procedure to patients with pain from spinal stenosis. Dr. Burstein is a graduate of the University of Michigan and the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center where he was president of Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He completed a surgical internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland, and a Fellowship in Neurological Surgery at the Mayo Clinic Foundation, Rochester, Minnesota. He also received a masters degree in neurosurgery from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Burstein served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy Medical Corps. in the U.S. and overseas. A member of numerous prestigious medical societies and organizations, Dr. Burstein has been the recipient of many notable and distinguished honors and awards. He plays an active role in establishing medical policies and medical legal issues for neurosurgeons. He represents Neurosurgery on the Interspecialty Committee for the New York State Medical Society. He is Medical Director for Think First, Long Island, New York, an organization started by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. Dr. Burstein has taught numerous postgraduate courses and made significant contributions to academic literature. He is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He served as Chief of Neurosurgery at South Nassau Communities Hospital, from 1980 to 2011. He is past president and was formerly the executive director of the New York State Neurosurgical Society.
