About Dr. Evan Joiner

Dr. Evan F. Joiner is a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon providing comprehensive spine care at Holy Name. He treats conditions of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, including degenerative disease, scoliosis and other spinal deformities, spinal tumors, and problems after prior spine surgery. His expertise includes minimally invasive surgery and advanced spinal reconstruction. Dr. Joiner takes time to understand how symptoms affect each patient’s life and what they hope to return to doing. He explains the diagnosis and the full range of treatment options, including nonsurgical care. When surgery is appropriate, he develops a plan tailored to the patient’s goals and circumstances. Dr. Joiner is an Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery at Columbia University and Research Director of the Columbia Center for Spinal Neuromodulation and Recovery. He graduated cum laude from Yale University and earned his medical degree from Columbia, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed neurosurgery residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, an enfolded fellowship in minimally invasive spine surgery, and Columbia’s Comprehensive Adult and Pediatric Spinal Deformity Fellowship. His research explores spinal cord stimulation to improve recovery after spinal cord injury and cervical myelopathy. He and his Columbia collaborators are conducting a randomized clinical trial of stimulation after cervical spinal cord injury. His work has received support from the National Institutes of Health and the New York State Spinal Cord Injury Research Board, as well as the Fessler and Kuntz Scholar Awards from the AANS/CNS Spine Section. Through the collaboration between Holy Name and Columbia University, Dr. Joiner is proud to bring the expertise and resources of an academic spine program to patients at Holy Name.
